I am Dr. Charles Apoki, a proud Urhobo man, and an elder statesman in both Urhobo land and Nigeria. My intention today is to clarify a matter of utmost importance concerning the Urhobo nation and recent claims of its inclusion in the proposed map of Biafra as one of the 48 states, with Oleh purportedly listed as its capital.
Let me categorically state that the Urhobo nation has not been consulted, negotiated with, or agreed to be part of the Biafran movement or its proposed territory. Urhobo people are distinct, independent, and proud of their heritage and identity.
Urhobo: A Nation of Strength and Rich Heritage
The Urhobo nation boasts a population that surpasses those of 75 independent countries, including nations like Saint Kitts and Nevis, Liechtenstein, and Nauru. We govern eight local government areas in Delta State, a region rich in oil, gas reserves, and fertile agricultural lands. Beyond our natural resources, the Urhobo people are known for their intellectual capacity, cultural richness, and global influence.
Urhobo professionals and entrepreneurs have excelled worldwide, including in major cities like London, Texas, and across Nigeria. We have proven that we are capable of standing on our own, whether as a self-sufficient state in Nigeria or an independent entity if it ever comes to that.
Clarifying Our Position
While we respect the right of every group to agitate for self-determination, as enshrined in the principles of freedom and association, we reject any attempt to conscript the Urhobo people into a movement or cause without our consent. Biafra is not our cause, and the inclusion of the Urhobo nation in their plans is unwelcome and unauthorized.
To be clear, we hold no animosity toward our Igbo brothers and sisters. In fact, I have fond memories of my time in Igboland, where I experienced great kindness and hospitality. However, Urhobo is Urhobo, and we cherish our identity.
A Call for Leadership and Unity
True leadership is not just about holding office but about taking initiatives that represent the collective will of your people. As an elder in Urhobo land, it is my responsibility to state unequivocally that the Urhobo nation is not part of Biafra.
We stand as a united people, capable of thriving in a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. For those pursuing secession, we wish you well in your aspirations. However, we urge you to respect our sovereignty and identity as Urhobo people.
In Conclusion
Let this be a public notice: the Urhobo nation is not part of Biafra. We value our place in Nigeria and will continue to contribute to its progress while preserving our heritage and autonomy.
God bless the Urhobo nation. God bless Nigeria.
I remain your friend,
Dr. Charles Apoki
