Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams. Lessons From the Struggles of My Life

I’m your friend, Dr. Charles Apoki. Today, I want to encourage you not to give up on your dreams, no matter how daunting the journey may seem. My life’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and hard work.

Years ago, my father told me I would become a medical doctor. At that time, we lived in a mud house in the slums. I was just 10 years old, but I clung to that dream. Later, I gained admission to the University of Ibadan, one of the best institutions in the world, but the journey to get there was anything but easy.

The Struggles of My Journey

When I entered the University of Ibadan, my father couldn’t afford to buy me a coat for matriculation. I had to borrow a coat, tie, and even shoes from friends. I didn’t have much, but I had a vision—a place called “there.” However, the path to “there” is often filled with challenges and setbacks.

In 1978, I applied to medical school through direct entry, but my application was rejected. It felt like my dream had been truncated. I returned home and worked as a health science teacher for a year. During that time, I saved 300 naira—equivalent to $600 back then. Despite the disappointment, I held onto my dream, knowing that the journey might be slow, but I would get there.

Like the snail entering Noah’s Ark, your journey may be slower than others, but persistence will see you through. Setbacks are not the end; they are only temporary roadblocks. When I finally gained admission to medical school, I faced another challenge: I had not received my admission letter. Determined, I traveled to Lagos, a city I’d never been to, and navigated unfamiliar streets to ensure I secured my place. That act of daring was a turning point.

Lessons From Struggles

Life’s struggles are not designed to destroy us but to build us. I’ve experienced hunger, borrowed books to study, and gone without basic necessities. Yet, those struggles shaped me. They taught me resourcefulness and made me appreciate the blessings I have today.

There’s a story I often tell about a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. When someone tried to help by cutting the cocoon open, the butterfly couldn’t fly. The struggle to break free was necessary for its wings to develop strength. Similarly, your struggles will form the framework for your success.

Achieving the Vision

Despite the challenges, I graduated as a medical doctor—the second from my community and the first in my extended family. However, I couldn’t afford transport money to attend my convocation. Today, by God’s grace, I have multiple cars, properties, and the ability to travel the world with my family. The struggles of my past make me deeply grateful for my present.

Follow Your Path

I chose an unconventional path. I stopped practicing medicine at 40 to focus on my calling. Many thought it was insanity, but I had a deep conviction and stayed resolute. Today, my work has earned recognition, including an award from the University of Ibadan Alumni Association for my advocacy and leadership.

Your journey may not look like mine. Your struggles may be different, but the principle remains: stay focused on your vision. Don’t blame your parents, your country, or others for your challenges. Take personal responsibility and keep pushing forward.

A Word of Encouragement

If you’re feeling discouraged, remember this: there is a place called “there.” It might take longer than expected, but you will get there. Your struggles today are preparing you for the blessings of tomorrow.

Remember, you are not alone. Keep dreaming, keep striving, and never give up. You will get there.

God bless you.
