I want to share some thoughts on the true purpose of the Church. The Church was not established to make people rich or poor, but to raise responsible Kingdom citizens. When God created Adam, he had everything, yet he was given a responsibility to work the garden. Responsibility is at the heart of human existence, and this is what the Church must emphasize.
Many people today have a gambling mentality towards religion. They think of it as a quick way to gain favor, but God has a process. The Bible teaches that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works that were prepared for us in advance. It’s not about what we can get, but about what we are designed to do in God’s kingdom.
Jesus understood the importance of responsibility at a young age, saying, “I should be about my Father’s business.” As Christians, we should follow this example. To grow in stature and obtain favor from God and man, we need to identify our responsibilities in the Kingdom. Each of us has a unique purpose, and when we discover it, our work becomes easier, more fulfilling, and rewarding.
There are signs that show when you’re operating in your calling: ease of operation, results, commendation, recommendation, recognition, and ultimately, reward. When you’re diligent in your work, as the Bible says, you will stand before kings.
The prosperity gospel, as often taught today, misses the point if it does not emphasize responsibility. True prosperity comes from fulfilling your God-given duties. Our generation is at risk of becoming dependent on the anointing of others instead of becoming fountains of living waters ourselves. We need to break free from the mindset of seeking miracles and blessings without a sense of duty and service.
Christians need to take ownership of their roles in society, not just in the Church. The early missionaries who brought Christianity to northern Nigeria did so out of a deep sense of responsibility, and we need to carry on that legacy. The Church should produce citizens who contribute positively to their communities and nations.
At the end of the day, the real measure of success is not in material wealth but in fulfilling the responsibilities God has placed on our lives. The Church must raise a generation of responsible, proactive Christians who understand that their work in the Kingdom is their key to favor, provision, and fulfillment.
