Nigerian youth, I understand the allure of emulating celebrities like Davido. Many times, when given advice, the common retort is, “It’s because the person is poor.” Let me tell you something important.
During the celebration, I observed something significant: Chioma whispered to Davido, and he then pulled his father to come and dance. Throughout the excitement, Davido’s father remained calm and composed. Why? Because the Adelekes are incredibly wealthy and have been building their wealth for years.
Know Their Background:
- Wealth and Investment: Davido’s father, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, has been an investor for years, dedicating time, energy, and resources to building wealth. He has multiple businesses, real estate properties, and even a university.
- Education: The man has two PhDs—yes, two! Before you start imitating Davido, ask yourself if you come from a similar background.
- Connections: Davido was born into a network of influential connections. Dangote himself came to pick him up from the hospital when he was born. Do you have that kind of network?
Understand Reality:
Davido is multi-talented, and his success is not just by chance. His moniker, OBO (Omo Baba Olowo), literally means “the son of a rich man.” It’s not arrogance; it’s a fact. Don’t let excitement cloud your judgment. Don’t fantasize about living a similar life without having the same foundation.
Davido has been advised by Dangote to manage his wealth wisely. He invests his money. If you attempt to live like him without similar means, you might face severe financial issues. The percentage of income Davido uses to shine is minimal compared to his total wealth. His lavish wedding could easily be funded by just two or three shows.
Cultural and Financial Realities:
Did you notice the full force of the Yoruba culture at Davido’s celebration? The presence of old and new money was palpable. The Yoruba have a strong cultural and financial legacy. If you don’t have such a legacy, it’s wise to manage your life carefully.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I, a medical doctor, was selling broilers to make ends meet. Davido’s father is only two years older than I am, yet our financial standings are worlds apart. Reality check: He is far ahead, but that doesn’t discourage me.
Conclusion:
Build your life gradually. You may not reach the Adeleke level or Davido’s level immediately, but keep building. Your great-grandchild or grandchild might shine as a star because of the foundation you lay today. Don’t be shy in your hustle as long as it’s legitimate. Do your thing according to your capacity.
