Stupid Political Loyalty and Followership

Stupid political loyalty and followership is a prevalent problem, not just in politics but in various aspects of life, particularly in Africa.

In a previous video titled “Dare to Walk Alone,” I addressed how, in Africa, we are often conditioned to be submissive to age, wealth, authority, position, and religion. This conditioning leads to intellectual docility, where people switch off their brains in the presence of someone perceived as superior.

The Problem of Blind Loyalty

A compelling example of this issue is the South Korean airlines, which faced numerous air crashes until American experts reviewed their training processes. They discovered that junior pilots, out of respect for their seniors, hesitated to correct mistakes, leading to tragic outcomes. This deference to authority, without questioning or critical thinking, is dangerous.

Interrogating Leadership

I received a message criticizing my comments about a religious leader. My response was simple: what tangible benefits has this leader provided? Over the years, we’ve seen numerous mistakes and misdirections from various leaders. It’s essential to question and analyze their actions and teachings.

As Dr. Myles Munroe pointed out, “If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” Leadership doesn’t guarantee intelligence or wisdom. Carlo Cipolla’s “laws of stupidity” emphasize that stupidity can be found in all spheres of life, regardless of position or status.

The Importance of Critical Thinking

I have trained myself to question everything. For instance, when people sang “Prayer is the master key,” I analyzed it. Did Jesus start with prayer? No, He started by identifying His purpose and responsibilities. Did He end with prayer? No, He ended with the result, “It is finished.” Thus, prayer is a key, but not the master key. Understanding and fulfilling one’s purpose is paramount.

Avoiding Blind Followership

Many people follow leadership blindly, especially in religious settings. They are told to perform irrational acts like eating grass or giving away their first salary of the year, without questioning the logic or scriptural basis. This kind of followership can lead to personal and professional ruin.

The Need for Independence

I have always maintained an independent mind. I don’t blindly follow leadership; I interrogate and analyze. This independent thinking has kept me from falling into the traps that many blindly loyal followers fall into.

Practical Application

Consider the medical field where many hospitals failed after the death of their founders. In contrast, schools often continued to thrive. This observation led me to shift my focus from medical practice to education. It’s essential to have an exit plan and think independently to ensure sustained success and avoid being misled.

Conclusion

Blind loyalty and followership can lead to disastrous outcomes. It’s crucial to question, analyze, and think critically about the directions and instructions given by leaders. This approach ensures that you are not led astray by blind leaders.

I remain your friend, Dr. Charles Apoki. Stay vigilant, think independently, and always interrogate leadership. God bless you.
