Prof. Soyinka recently claimed that Peter Obi’s team is incompetent, a view that deserves critical examination, particularly considering the distinguished Nobel laureate’s influence and past actions.
First and foremost, it’s essential to recognize the generational shift in how leadership and authority are perceived. This generation is not one to blindly respect titles or accolades. They are frustrated by the inadequacies and mistakes of past leadership, and they demand accountability from everyone, regardless of their status.
Point 1: The Changing Respect for Authority
This generation questions everything and everyone. The Bible’s admonition “do not touch my anointed and do my prophet no harm” is not as sacrosanct to today’s youth. They feel emboldened to challenge and hold accountable those in power because they have been pushed to the wall by the failures of the previous generations. They have little respect for traditional figures of authority – be they professors, bishops, or politicians – because they have been disappointed time and again.
Point 2: Equity and Clean Hands
Prof. Soyinka, to critique others, one must come to equity with clean hands. You led a public movement against Goodluck Jonathan, even participating in a protest with an effigy of his coffin. This action deeply affected Jonathan and his family. Therefore, you lack the moral high ground to condemn others for similar actions. This generation has seen the actions of yours and holds you accountable for them.
Point 3: The Pirates Confraternity and Its Legacy
Prof. Soyinka, you founded the Pirates Confraternity, which initially stood for justice, anti-corruption, and human development. However, the activities of such groups have evolved, and not always positively. Despite this, should your association with the Pirates disqualify you from your accolades or roles? Similarly, Peter Obi did not form the Obedient Movement; it crystallized around him, driven by the frustrations and aspirations of the people.
To illustrate, when you prepare a salt solution in the lab, a single grain of salt can initiate the crystallization process. Peter Obi is that grain, around whom a movement of people seeking change has formed. This does not disqualify him, just as the subsequent evolution of the Pirates Confraternity does not disqualify you.
The Need for Thoughtful Critique
Prof. Soyinka, it is crucial to be in touch with the realities of today. Your recent comments appear out of sync with the current political and social landscape. This disconnect might stem from various influences or a misjudgment of the current socio-political climate.
Social media has transformed public discourse, often becoming a harsh and unforgiving arena. Anyone in the public eye must be cautious about their comments, as the backlash can be swift and severe. Prof. Soyinka, your recent statements have missed the mark and risk diminishing your esteemed legacy.
