I am your friend, Dr. Charles Apoki. Today, I want to share my thoughts on a topic I call “The Leeches and the Lights.” This is about celebrating the brilliance of Nigerians across the globe while addressing the challenges we face as a nation.
Leeches and Light: A Metaphor for Nigeria
Leeches are blood-sucking flatworms found in African streams. They attach themselves to unsuspecting victims, draining their life force. In contrast, light represents energy, direction, productivity, and illumination—it enables growth and exposes darkness.
In Nigeria, the leeches represent a generation that thrives on draining the nation—sapping its resources, perpetuating mediocrity, and resisting progress. However, the light symbolizes the younger generation of Nigerians who shine brightly wherever they go, excelling despite the odds.
Two Generations: A Stark Contrast
There are two distinct generations in Nigeria:
My Generation (Born in the 1950s and 60s):
- My generation largely benefited from the golden years of Nigeria’s post-independence era.
- Unfortunately, many in this group have become “leeches,” clinging to power and resources while stifling the nation’s growth.
The Younger Generation (Born from the 1980s onward):
- This generation is frustrated with Nigeria’s dysfunction but remains proud of their Nigerian identity.
- They are dynamic, talented, and resilient, shining like stars wherever they go.
Celebrating the Lights of Nigeria
Let me highlight some examples of Nigerians illuminating the world with their brilliance:
- Ademola Lookman: Recently crowned African Footballer of the Year, Lookman represents the excellence of Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
- Chiamaka Nnadozie: Africa’s best female goalkeeper and a beacon of hope for women in sports.
- Nwajagu Samuel (Mr. International): Samuel stood out among contestants from around the world to win the prestigious title of Mr. International. His intelligence, charisma, and presence are a testament to the Nigerian spirit.
- Sinach, Rema, and Burna Boy: These artists are setting global standards in music, headlining concerts, and earning billions of naira for their talent.
- Nigerians in Academia: In universities like Harvard and Howard, Nigerians consistently deliver valedictory speeches, achieve top results, and exemplify academic excellence.
The Nigerian Spirit: Unstoppable and Uncontainable
Wherever you find Nigerians, you find excellence. But back home, many are frustrated by the systemic rot:
- The broken infrastructure that greets you as soon as you land at the airport.
- The oppressive systems that reward mediocrity over merit.
- The tribalism, religious bigotry, and corruption that stifle progress.
Yet, despite these challenges, Nigerians remain resilient. They refuse to be held down. Whether in sports, music, academia, or technology, Nigerians are making their mark globally.
A Call to the Leeches
Our generation has failed to provide the foundation this nation deserves. We have allegedly stolen trillions, built extravagant mansions, and perpetuated systemic rot. While our children shine as lights in the world, my generation remains the leeches, clinging to Nigeria and draining it dry.
But a new generation is rising—a generation that will not tolerate oppression or mediocrity. This generation will demand accountability and lead the nation to greatness.
Final Thoughts
To my children’s generation, I celebrate you. You are the best of God’s creation—the light of the world. Wherever you are—in Nigeria or the diaspora—continue to shine. Your resilience, talent, and excellence prove that the Nigerian spirit is indomitable.
To my generation, it’s time for self-reflection. Let us stop being leeches and start supporting the lights that will illuminate Nigeria’s future.
