I want to address a misconception I came across online. It left me astonished. I don’t know if it was artificial intelligence that generated it, but I heard someone say that it was tithe that Adam ate in the Garden of Eden, which caused God to drive him out.
This is an outrageous statement, and if we don’t correct such ideas, people will begin to view the church as nothing more than a group of charlatans or extortionists looking for ways to manipulate money out of people. Let’s get things straight.
First of all, Adam did not work. He was not engaged in any business or occupation that would require him to pay a tithe. Furthermore, who was Adam supposed to pay the tithe to? To God? For what purpose? Adam had everything in sufficiency. There was nothing mentioned in the Bible about God instructing Adam to pay a tithe. God provided everything for Adam, and it was all at his disposal. The idea of Adam paying a tithe is completely absurd.
The real reason Adam was driven out of the Garden of Eden was disobedience, not because he didn’t pay a tithe. God didn’t want Adam to eat from the tree of life and live forever in a sinful state. If it was all about tithe, then there would have been no need for Jesus to come and die for our sins.
What I’ve realized is that many of these so-called “God’s Generals” have backed themselves into a corner with their preaching. They are constantly engaged in grandiose projects, conspicuous consumption, and unnecessary competition, which leads them to continuously seek money. To finance these massive undertakings, they have to find ways to extract more money from their congregation, and this leads to all kinds of unscriptural claims being made.
I recently saw a video of a preacher in an Anglican church asking people to run forward with 200,000 Naira as an offering. Thankfully, a vicar came out and drove him out of the church. This is an example of how far some ministries have fallen, where everything is focused on money. We have to stop this trend. It has to end.
We need God’s help, and we also need a new generation of leaders who can bring about genuine change in the church.
