Today I want to share a few thoughts with you about how to intentionally enjoy old age as a man. As you can see, I’m sitting in this rocking chair, and it represents the peace that comes when you plan your life well, even before you get old.
When I was young, I developed a habit. Whenever I had a meal with fish, I would eat the fish last. It was symbolic for me. I would say, “God, now that we are suffering poverty, let me enjoy my life in my old age.” I wanted to make sure that after the struggles of youth, I would have peace and comfort in my later years.
Now, someone recently asked me, “How much did you pay for your ticket to come to this place? How much is the Airbnb?” To be honest, I don’t know. My life is now sponsored because when you pay your dues, life rewards you. As I sit here, my bills are handled, and I’m able to focus on living the life I always dreamed of.
There are a few key things you must do to enjoy your old age:
- Build a Strong Financial Base
You must create a financial foundation so solid that even when you’re not working, your money continues to grow. Right now, as I’m sitting here, my real estate is increasing in value, and my schools are still admitting students. My wife doesn’t need me to be there to keep things running. This is how you build a life where money accumulates even when you’re not actively involved.
- Enjoy Solitude and Companionship
Learn to enjoy being alone. Right now, my wife is in a different place, and I’m here by myself. I’ve learned to enjoy these moments of solitude. At the same time, it’s important to have companions around your age, people who understand your vision and challenges. - Stay Connected with the Younger Generation
Surround yourself with young people who can inspire you and keep you connected to new ideas and technology. I’m grateful for Pastor Abraham and the young men around me. In fact, the young man who brought me here didn’t even know me personally—Abraham handled all the arrangements. - Develop Yourself Continuously
As you age, you must continue to develop your content, charisma, capacity, and competence. Be consistent in everything you do. The Bible says, “Even in their old age, they will remain fruitful in the house of the Lord.” I am living proof that this is possible, and I believe you can live this way too.
I recently spoke for one hour, and the amount I was paid for that hour will shock you! This is what happens when you invest in yourself over the years.
I am Dr. Charles Apoki, and I am enjoying my life. If you don’t like it, well, that’s your problem. You can come and ask me over a drink!
God bless you as you plan for your old age!
