Edo State, the historical capital of the ancient Benin Kingdom and a beacon of civilization, is now witnessing a descent into chaos and disgrace. Once a land known for its royalty, elegance, and commitment to truth, Edo is now plagued by political thuggery and violence, particularly surrounding the governorship electoral tribunal in Benin City.
This is a shameful display that reflects the depths to which our nation is sinking due to the allure of dirty politics and corrupt money. It is unacceptable that a tribunal venue—a space meant for democratic dispute resolution—cannot be safeguarded from thugs. The sight of helpless policemen running around trying to contain the chaos is both disheartening and indicative of the state of our security institutions.
A Call for Sanity
Politicians in Edo State, and indeed Nigeria, must stop patronizing thugs. These so-called “strong men,” who should be community leaders and business figures, instead degrade themselves by fighting in the streets for political gains. Meanwhile, the children of these political gladiators enjoy secure lives abroad, while the sons of the less privileged fight their battles.
This thuggery fuels a culture of violence that has led to countless deaths, including those linked to cult groups in Benin City. What has happened to the Edo State that once stood as a symbol of enlightenment and progress?
Security Agencies Must Act
The security agencies in Edo State and Benin City must rise to the occasion. It is shameful that such lawlessness is allowed to persist. Apply the force necessary to restore order and drive out these rascals. The police and other security bodies must show they are capable of maintaining peace and protecting the integrity of democratic processes.
Furthermore, the sponsors of these violent acts—whether from Abuja or within the state—must be brought to justice. Democracy is not about fighting to serve; it is about serving to fight the real enemies: corruption, poverty, illiteracy, and underdevelopment.
A Cry for Leadership
Elders in Edo State and the South-South region must speak up. Silence in the face of this degradation will only embolden the perpetrators. When elders fail to act, the youth lose their way, mistaking vultures for chickens. We cannot allow this region to continue its downward spiral into political rascality and anarchy.
Enough Is Enough
Edo State and the South-South region must stop this madness. Let us channel our energy and resources into developing our communities rather than tearing them apart. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to uphold the values of civility, enlightenment, and progress.
Let us put an end to this shameful show once and for all.
