IGBOPHOBIA Is Unfair | Gov. Alex Oti, That's a Good One

Today, I want to address two topics that highlight the importance of unity, fairness, and national integration in Nigeria. Let’s begin with the commendable decision by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to appoint Mr. Benson O. as the Head of Service in the state.

Breaking Barriers in Governance

Mr. Benson O., originally from Edo State, served in Abia State during his National Youth Service. His dedication and excellence earned him an award during his service year, and he was retained in the state’s civil service. Over time, he rose through the ranks to become the Head of Service.

This appointment is a testament to Governor Otti’s patriotism and progressive leadership. It shows that excellence and merit can transcend ethnic lines. The governor’s decision reflects the spirit of citizenship, as opposed to tribalism or selfish politicking.

Governor Otti’s actions remind us that true leaders prioritize the collective good of their people and the nation over narrow tribal or partisan interests. This is a model for all leaders in our country.

A History of Inclusivity

This isn’t the first instance of such inclusivity in Nigeria. In Lagos State, individuals from other tribes have been appointed as commissioners, and even a member of the State Assembly is of Urhobo origin. Similarly, in Northern Nigeria, individuals from diverse backgrounds have served as special advisers and in other important roles.

Looking beyond Nigeria, we’ve seen similar examples, such as Nigerians serving as Chief Justice of Uganda or holding significant positions in The Gambia. These instances underscore the values of unity and integration, which are crucial for the development of any nation.

An Expanding Igbo Nation

The second point I want to address is the recent election of a senator from Ikwerre as the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the pan-Igbo global body. This is significant because it shows the acceptance of Ikwerre people as part of the Igbo nation. It also speaks to the democratic and inclusive nature of the Igbo people.

The emergence of this leader is a sign of progress. It demonstrates that barriers are being broken, and new foundations for unity are being laid. In a region where there were once tensions and divisions, this development signals hope for a stronger Igbo nation and, by extension, a stronger Nigeria.

A Call for Unity

If there are still factions or divisions, I urge everyone to bury the hatchet and move forward together. Unity is the foundation for progress, and we cannot afford to let petty differences hold us back.

Closing Thoughts

Congratulations to Mr. Benson O. on his well-deserved appointment, and kudos to Governor Alex Otti for his exemplary leadership. These actions are a reminder that there is hope for a united and prosperous Nigeria.

Let’s embrace fairness, meritocracy, and inclusivity in all aspects of our lives. Together, we can build a great nation.

God bless you, God bless Abia State, God bless the Igbo Nation, and God bless Nigeria.
