Conquer This and Live an Adventurous Life | My Experience

I am Dr. Charles Apoki, and today, I want to share one of the most pivotal lessons of my life: conquering the fear of death. It’s a journey that has shaped my decisions, strengthened my resolve, and opened doors to a more adventurous and fulfilling life.

The Paralyzing Power of Fear

As a child, I was haunted by the fear of death. Questions swirled in my mind: What happens if someone wakes up in a coffin? How does death feel? These thoughts plagued me, creating an unhealthy fixation. Fear became a companion, especially during moments of vulnerability, like witnessing death during my medical career.

But everything changed when I encountered Christ. Becoming born again didn’t just bring spiritual transformation—it liberated me from the fear of death and human threats. This freedom equipped me with the courage to take risks that many would consider reckless, yet they were calculated and necessary for growth.

Lessons From Israel: Courage Amidst Chaos

The Israeli Defense Forces epitomize bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. I recall the story of an Israeli tank commander during the Yom Kippur War. Despite severe injuries and overwhelming enemy forces, he chose to charge forward rather than retreat. His courage not only saved his comrades but also contributed to the capture of the Golan Heights.

This kind of boldness inspired me. The fear of death had to be conquered if I wanted to achieve anything significant. Life rewards the bold, not the timid.

Risk, Reward, and Resilience

Over the years, I’ve taken many bold steps that defied conventional wisdom:

  1. Building My Practice: After resigning from the hospital where I worked, I ventured into private practice. I opened clinics in remote areas others feared. I hired armed guards for security but refused to let fear dictate my actions.
  2. Importing Cars: In the early days, I imported cars from Belgium. I would drive unregistered vehicles through police roadblocks at night, undeterred by the risks.
  3. Fish Meal Business: When venturing into the fish meal trade, I once found myself stranded overnight in a remote town. I slept in a mechanic’s workshop, trusting God and my instincts.
  4. Ministry Challenges: On one occasion, I slept in a motor park to preach the gospel. I’ve faced threats from assassins and navigated treacherous journeys to spread my message.

These experiences reinforced a vital truth: when you conquer the fear of death, you liberate yourself to live fully.

The Cost of Fear

Fear is a paralyzer. It stifles creativity, limits ambition, and robs you of opportunities. I’ve seen how it can affect the body, leading to stress-related illnesses. When I worked in the hospital, constant exposure to death triggered symptoms of anxiety. But once I resigned and embraced a life of faith and courage, those symptoms vanished.

A Life Without Fear

Living without the fear of death doesn’t mean being reckless. It means being intentional, rational, and bold. I take precautions—I’m security-conscious, careful in public, and mindful of risks. But I refuse to let fear hold me back.

The Bible teaches us not to fear those who can harm the body but to fear God alone. This divine perspective has been my anchor.
