I am your friend, Dr. Charles Apoki. Today, I want to address a critical question that has been weighing on my mind and that of many Nigerians: Where are the Labour Party legislators? Where are those who rode on the waves of the Obidient movement to secure their positions in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and state Houses of Assembly?
A Deafening Silence Amid National Crises
Since their election, we have scarcely heard from these legislators. In a time when Nigeria is plagued by mounting economic challenges, insecurity, and governance issues, their silence is perplexing. Their mandate was clear: to represent the people, amplify their voices, and push for meaningful change.
Even Governor Alex Otti, a notable Labour Party figure, seems to have retreated into the shadows concerning national issues. Why aren’t these leaders speaking out? Why aren’t they championing the causes that fueled their election campaigns?
The Nigerian Politician: Opportunism at Its Peak
Unfortunately, the typical Nigerian politician is an opportunist. They see political platforms as vehicles for personal advancement, often jumping ship when it suits them. Many politicians who have defected to other parties after leveraging platforms like Labour Party exemplify this behavior.
They ride on the goodwill and activism of movements like the Obidient wave, only to abandon the people once they gain power. Now, with their pockets lined and mouths stuffed, they cannot whistle—they cannot speak up.
Lessons for the Future
This experience teaches us a vital lesson: vet your candidates thoroughly before giving them your votes.
- Choose candidates who are vocal and committed to representing the people’s interests.
- Look for individuals with a track record of standing for justice and speaking truth to power.
The Obidient movement was built on hope, resilience, and a desire for transformative leadership. Yet, it appears some of those elected have betrayed that trust, choosing comfort over advocacy and compliance over courage.
A Call to Action
Labour Party legislators, if you are reading this, it is time to stand up and speak out. The country is in crisis, and your voices are needed now more than ever. If you remain silent, you risk becoming complicit in the systemic failures and injustices that plague our nation.
To the Nigerian electorate, let this be a wake-up call. In future elections, do not be swayed by party platforms alone. Instead, focus on the integrity, competence, and courage of the candidates themselves.
I remain your friend,
Dr. Charles Apoki
God bless you.
