Governor of Anambra State Dr. Soludo Tackling K11dnapas | My Take

I want to reflect on Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s bold efforts to combat kidnapping and insecurity in Anambra State. This initiative, while commendable, exposes deeper societal issues that demand our attention.

Governor Soludo’s Actions Against Kidnappers

Governor Soludo has taken a firm stance against kidnapping by deploying state security operatives and demolishing properties linked to criminal activities, including buildings and hotels. This action demonstrates a decisive commitment to tackling insecurity in the state.

Finally, we see a leader addressing the alarming rise in insecurity in the eastern part of Nigeria. However, while these steps are commendable, they also reveal deeper societal challenges, including self-hatred and greed.

A Culture of Self-Destruction

It is troubling that many of these crimes are perpetrated by Nigerians against their fellow Nigerians. This reflects a form of reverse slavery. Historically, we sold our brothers and sisters into slavery; today, we kidnap, traffic, and harm our own people for money.

This problem isn’t unique to one region. The north faces daily kidnappings, the west has seen high-profile abductions, and the east is plagued by ritual killings and violent crimes. This epidemic of self-destruction stems from a collective obsession with quick wealth and ostentatious living.

The Pursuit of Wealth Without Work

One of the root causes of these crimes is the unhealthy idolization of wealth in our society. Social media, conspicuous consumption, and the “I-pass-my-neighbor” mentality have fueled a culture where money is worshipped, and its source is rarely questioned.

In Anambra State, for example, the display of wealth during festive periods, with convoys of luxury cars and extravagant ceremonies, sets unrealistic expectations for young people. The result is a dangerous pursuit of riches at all costs, often through illegal means.

This mindset has infiltrated every aspect of our society, including our religious institutions. Churches celebrate wealthy individuals without examining the source of their wealth, reinforcing the message that money, no matter how it is made, guarantees respect and admiration.

The Role of Intelligence and Investigative Policing

While demolishing properties linked to criminals sends a strong message, it is not enough. There must be greater emphasis on intelligence gathering and investigative policing. Criminals often operate with the complicity or negligence of hotel staff, security personnel, or even community members.

Governor Soludo’s use of local vigilantes and intelligence gathering is a step in the right direction. However, law enforcement must focus on detailed investigations to identify and prosecute those involved in these crimes. Tracking suspicious financial activities and interrogating individuals living beyond their means can also help curb criminal activities.

A Call for Mindset Reorientation

The solution to Nigeria’s insecurity challenges goes beyond physical interventions; it requires a shift in mindset. We must reorient our values to emphasize hard work, honesty, and legitimate wealth creation. From schools to religious institutions, the message must be clear: wealth without work is unsustainable and destructive.

Splitting Nigeria into smaller units, as some advocate, will not solve these problems. The same issues of greed, corruption, and self-destruction exist in every part of the country. Only a collective change in mindset can bring lasting transformation.

Commending Governor Soludo

I commend Governor Soludo for taking bold steps to tackle insecurity in Anambra State. His efforts should inspire other governors across the country to take the fight to criminals and restore safety to their communities.

Conclusion

Let us all reflect on the values we uphold and the messages we send to the next generation. Wealth is good, but it must be pursued with integrity and hard work. Together, we can build a society where life is valued above money and where peace and security are prioritized.

God bless you.
Dr. Charles Apoki.
