Lessons From Jacob’s Blessings on His Children| Someone Is Watching You. Be Careful

I am Dr. Charles Apoki, and today, I want to share insights from my study on Jacob and his blessings over his children as recorded in Genesis 49. This chapter offers profound lessons on life, legacy, and the impact of our actions.

In Genesis 49, Jacob called his sons together to pronounce blessings and reveal what would happen to them in the future. As I reflected on this, I was reminded of the power of parental blessings in shaping destinies. Our traditions and faith teach us to honour our parents and seek their blessings. I recall how my father always spoke positive words over my life, and those words have continued to guide me.

The Weight of Actions

Jacob’s words to Reuben, his firstborn, carry a stark warning: “Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel” (Genesis 49:4). Reuben’s actions—going into his father’s bed—were not forgotten. Jacob observed this and kept it in his heart until the moment of his blessings.

This reminds us that someone is always watching us. Our actions, both good and bad, have consequences. Whether it’s a parent, a mentor, or God, records are being kept. Young people, especially those on social media, must take note. The choices you make today can shape your future relationships and opportunities.

The Dangers of Anger and Violence

Simeon and Levi were condemned for their violent and vengeful behaviour. Jacob declared that their anger would lead to their dispersion in Israel. In today’s society, we see similar patterns of destruction and violence in cultism, kidnappings, and abuses of power. These actions have long-term repercussions, often affecting entire generations.

God is watching. When you use power to oppress or harm others, there will be consequences. We must strive to live with integrity, peace, and respect for others.

The Power of Responsibility and Legacy

Judah, in contrast, received a powerful blessing: “The scepter will not depart from Judah” (Genesis 49:10). His actions and character earned him a legacy that culminated in the lineage of Jesus Christ. Similarly, Joseph, who resisted evil and remained faithful, was blessed abundantly and given a double portion through his sons.

This teaches us the importance of responsibility and faithfulness. As parents and leaders, we must also recognize the strengths and weaknesses of our children and make decisions based on competence and integrity, not just tradition.

A Call to Action

As I reflect on Jacob’s blessings, I urge you to:

  • Honor your parents and mentors. Seek their blessings and prayers while they are alive.
  • Live a life of integrity. Someone is always observing your actions.
  • Avoid rebellion and destructive behaviors. They often lead to long-term suffering.
  • Be intentional about your legacy. Write your will and ensure that competent, trustworthy individuals manage your estate.

Let us learn from the stories of Reuben, Judah, Joseph, and others. May we strive to live lives that attract blessings and leave a lasting positive impact.

God bless you.
