In Jeremiah 17:11, the Bible tells us that a person who gathers wealth through fraudulent means is like a partridge that incubates eggs it did not lay. When the eggs hatch, they fly away, leaving the bird with nothing. Similarly, those who acquire money dishonestly will eventually lose it, and in old age, they will suffer the consequences of their actions.
This truth is playing out before our very eyes in today’s society. Young men flaunt ill-gotten wealth, driving flashy cars, wearing expensive jewelry, and spending recklessly. Many of them have no legitimate source of income, yet they live extravagantly. Young girls from poor homes are often lured into this lifestyle, dazzled by the temporary display of wealth.
The Short-Lived Glory of Fraudulent Wealth
In Delta State, I have observed the decline of many young men who once lived in luxury through internet fraud, kidnapping, or ritualistic practices. They are now selling off their possessions—televisions, generators, and even houses—at throwaway prices just to make ends meet.
I’ve seen the aftermath of these fleeting riches. For instance, a man who defrauded a bank hurriedly built a story building but was arrested and jailed. The building was left incomplete and eventually demolished. Another story involves a pair of twins who engaged in illicit activities to build massive houses, only to be arrested before completing them.
Money obtained fraudulently never lasts. It often leads to ruin, disgrace, and even death. Proverbs warns us that stolen money turns to gravel in the mouth—it cannot bring satisfaction or lasting joy.
Lessons from Hushpuppi and Others
Consider the case of Hushpuppi, who flaunted his wealth on social media. Today, he is in prison in the United States, serving as a cautionary tale for those who idolize ill-gotten riches. Stories like his remind us of the futility of pursuing wealth through dishonest means.
One person I know made ₦250 million through fraud, indulging in drugs and a reckless lifestyle. Today, he is insane, his life destroyed by his own choices.
A Better Way: Integrity and Hard Work
The Bible teaches that we should earn our livelihood through honest labor. Jesus demonstrated this principle when He wore a crown of thorns, signifying the end of striving through sweat alone. By using our God-given minds and adhering to principles of hard work, integrity, and delayed gratification, we can create sustainable wealth without compromising our values.
Legitimate wealth brings peace of mind, stability, and lasting joy. It allows us to enjoy the fruits of our labor without fear of losing everything to one illness, accident, or disaster.
The Trap of Wealth Obsession
The pursuit of wealth at all costs leads to destruction. Manipulating others, engaging in criminal activities, or resorting to fraudulent practices will only result in regret. We must learn to be content with what we have and work diligently to improve our circumstances.
Final Thoughts
As I reflect on the life of Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100 years old, I am reminded of the beauty of a life well-lived. He lived modestly, served others, and was surrounded by his family at the end. Contrast that with those who spend their lives chasing ill-gotten wealth, only to end in disgrace.
Young men and women, I urge you to embrace the principles of hard work, integrity, and frugality. Build sustainable wealth that will bless you and future generations.
