A Tribute to Jimmy Carter: A Great Baptist | Passed on at 100 Years | Married for 75 Years

It’s 1:45 a.m., and I felt compelled to get out of bed to record this tribute to a man whose life has inspired me deeply. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. He was not only the oldest living former U.S. President but also an extraordinary example of humility, dedication, and service to both God and humanity.

A Life of Faith and Service

Jimmy Carter was married to Rosalynn Carter for 75 years, making them the longest-documented married couple in U.S. history. More importantly, he was a devout Baptist and a Sunday school teacher who lived out his faith in remarkable ways. Despite serving as the President of the United States—the highest office in the world—he continued to teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.

Even after leaving office, Carter remained committed to his faith, teaching Sunday school as late as 2018, at the age of 94. Imagine a former president sitting humbly under the leadership of a pastor who could have been his grandson. That level of humility is rare, and it has had a profound impact on me personally.

A Model of Humility

Carter lived in a modest two-bedroom house with his wife, walking to church with Secret Service agents accompanying them. People would travel from across the globe, some arriving as early as 4 a.m. and sleeping in their cars, just to hear him teach Sunday school. He avoided fanfare, often sneaking into the church and sitting among the congregation.

His humility extended beyond the church. As a former carpenter, he even made offering trays and wooden crosses for his church, leaving his initials beneath them. This example of service—coming from someone who held the most powerful office in the world—has been a constant reminder to me of the value of serving God and humanity without seeking recognition.

Inspiration for My Ministry

Carter’s life inspired me deeply, shaping my approach to ministry and service. His outreach efforts in developing countries, tackling diseases, and improving living conditions motivated me to start similar initiatives. From scrubbing toilets in remand homes to providing medical care for motherless babies and lepers, his legacy of selfless service has been a driving force in my life.

As a medical doctor, I’ve traveled to places like Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Liberia to serve people, often under challenging conditions. Carter’s commitment to humanity encouraged me to see every act of service, no matter how small, as significant when done with the right mindset.

A Legacy of Integrity

Jimmy Carter didn’t build extravagant mansions or amass wealth for himself. Instead, he focused on creating a legacy of integrity and service. While African politicians often squander resources on lavish lifestyles, Carter demonstrated how to live modestly while making a profound impact on the world.

His leadership during the Iranian hostage crisis, his efforts as an election monitor in various countries, and his ability to remain grounded despite his achievements are testaments to his character.

Final Thoughts

Jimmy Carter lived a good life, had a strong marriage, and left behind an enduring legacy of service. His life is a challenge to all of us to remain humble, find our purpose, and excel in it.

This tribute is my way of honoring a man who taught me that you don’t need to hold a title to serve God effectively. You can be a Sunday school teacher, a carpenter, or a former president—what matters is your commitment to serving God and others.
