Value Is a Product and an Opportunity Cost | You Create It

Life is a series of transactions, a continuous exchange of value. Every decision we make reflects the worth we place on people, things, or experiences. Value is deeply tied to opportunity cost—the alternative you are willing to forgo to gain something else.

For example, if I have ₦500 that I could use to buy ice cream but instead give it to someone to cover their transport fare, the ice cream I forgo becomes the opportunity cost. This decision reflects the value I place on the person who needed the fare.

This principle is not only relevant in our financial choices but also in our relationships. Even the bond between parents and children is influenced by the sacrifices parents make for their children. While parental value is naturally given, the depth of appreciation children show is proportional to the sacrifices they perceive.

Value Is a Reaction

Value is also a reaction to what we observe in others. People respond to the qualities they perceive in you or the contributions you’ve made. This is why it’s essential to present yourself as valuable in every sphere—whether in relationships, business, or your personal brand.

In today’s world, everything is branding. How you talk, behave, and interact with others is an ongoing advertisement for who you are. People assess your value based on how you present yourself. Don’t take this lightly.

Lessons from Ruth

The biblical story of Ruth is a profound example of value creation. After ten years of marriage and immense personal loss, Ruth still maintained her worth and became attractive to Boaz. Her story teaches us that value isn’t static—it can be nurtured and sustained over time. Ruth’s legacy led to the lineage of Jesus Christ, showing the power of creating and preserving value.
