Ten Fears You Must Conquer in Your Life if You Must Excel | the Battles I Fight Daily

I am your friend, Dr. Charles Apoki. Today, let’s discuss an enemy that has held many people back: fear. Fear is not just an emotion; it is a choice. In the Bible, there are 366 “fear nots,” one for each day of the year, including leap years. This shows that fear is something we are meant to overcome daily. Bold people are not immune to fear—they simply choose to move forward despite it.

There is only one fear we should embrace: the fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom. However, there are other fears—paralyzing ones—that we must conquer to excel in life. Let me share the ten most common fears that hold people back and how we can overcome them.

1. Fear of Dreaming Big

Many people fear aiming high. They settle for mediocrity, saying things like, “This is enough for me.” I call this social acrophobia, the fear of reaching great heights. If you don’t dream big, you’ll never achieve greatness.

2. Fear of Rejection

The fear of not being good enough can cripple you. I teach my children to declare, “We are the best!” because confidence is key. Believe in yourself and your abilities.

3. Fear of Failure

Failure is part of the journey to success. If you wait to feel ready or perfect before starting, you’ll never begin. My first public speaking experience was terrifying, but I pressed on. The best way to start is to start.

4. Fear of Being Wrong

Fear of making mistakes can paralyze you. Instead, let it drive you to prepare, verify, and learn. Mistakes are inevitable, but they are also opportunities to grow.

5. Fear of Criticism

No matter what you do, people will criticize you. They will talk, but let them! Whether it’s your clothes, your work, or your choices, someone will always have something to say. Focus on your purpose and ignore the noise.

6. Fear of People Walking Away

People will leave you—friends, family, or colleagues. But don’t let their departure hold you back. Be ready to move on and chart a new path. I’ve walked away from careers and ventures to pursue new opportunities, and I’ve never regretted it.

7. Fear of Helping Others Succeed

Some people fear that those they help will surpass them. This mindset limits growth. When you lift others, you elevate yourself. My life is like a flowing river—each time you meet me, I bring something new. I don’t fear others becoming better than me; I rejoice in their success.

8. Fear of Betrayal

Betrayal is inevitable. Someone you trust will betray you at some point. However, don’t let this fear make you distrust everyone. Take precautions, but live your life fully.

9. Fear of Losing Out

The fear of missing out (FOMO) often leads people to follow the crowd. But those who wear crowns don’t run with the crowd. Value your uniqueness and focus on what truly matters to you.

10. Fear of Walking Alone

Walking alone can be intimidating, but it is often the most rewarding path. Some of my greatest achievements came during periods when I walked alone. Be adventurous and dare to take bold steps.

The Only Fear You Should Have

The only fear worth keeping is the fear of God. This fear keeps us grounded, honest, and aligned with our purpose. It ensures that we live righteously and treat others with kindness.

As we approach 2025, I urge you to conquer these fears and embrace boldness in every area of your life. Remember, fear is a choice, but so is courage. Choose to excel.
