How to Turn Your Pain to Gain

Life is full of challenges, and the pains we endure often feel insurmountable. But those moments of struggle can become the stepping stones to a life of purpose and impact. Yesterday, my brother and friend, Dr. Leemon Ikpea, the Group Managing CEO of Lee Engineering Group of Companies, received a prestigious award during the University of Benin’s convocation ceremony. His journey is a testimony to turning pain into gain.

Dr. Ikpea once faced the humiliation of being unable to pay school fees during his time at Baptist High School. He would trek long distances to school, often being the only one in the dining hall without cleared fees. Today, that same man has funded the education of thousands of students across Nigeria through scholarships. His pain gave birth to opportunities for others.

Similarly, I have my own story. Growing up, my father struggled to pay my school fees. In 1973, he pleaded with a friend for 22 naira to pay my fees at Government College, Ughelli. The man questioned why my father sent me to a school meant for the wealthy, adding, “You don’t prevent a child from having big teeth, but he must have big lips to cover them.” My father, who had one blind eye, cried that day, and I swore to myself that no child under my watch would face such pain.

Today, I give scholarships to 20 students from my community every year. This commitment stems from that painful memory of my father’s tears and my resolve to ensure that others have the opportunities I almost missed.

Another defining moment was December 31, 1987. My daughter was gravely ill, and I could not afford her medications because my employer owed me months of unpaid salaries. That helplessness solidified my resolve: I would never owe salaries as an employer. To this day, I pay my staff twice in December, ensuring they can care for their families during the festive season.

The pain we experience is not just for us. It equips us with the empathy and drive to alleviate the struggles of others. The lessons we learn and the decisions we make can turn our suffering into a source of strength and generosity.

The blessings of pain lie in the wisdom it imparts and the opportunity it provides to bring about change. Whatever pain you’re going through today, remember that it can become a source of gain—not just for you but for those whose lives you will touch.
