Don’t Spend Today Pursuing What You Will Get Tired of Tomorrow

Today, I want to challenge you to reconsider how you spend your time, energy, and resources. Life has taught me that many of the things we chase today lose their appeal tomorrow. It’s important to focus on what truly matters and to practice delayed gratification.

The Trap of Short-Term Desires

Many people spend their best years pursuing things that bring only temporary satisfaction:

  • Relationships: You’re in university, and instead of focusing on your studies, you spend all your time chasing relationships. Marriage is important, but it will come at the right time. Don’t let it derail your future.
  • Materialism: Fancy clothes, shoes, and the latest gadgets might seem exciting, but their value fades quickly. In my early years, I wore only two pairs of shoes and cheap clothes, yet I stayed focused on my goals. Today, I have more than I need, and much of it comes as gifts for the dues I’ve paid.
  • Food and Pleasures: Overindulgence in food or other pleasures might seem satisfying now, but you’ll soon grow tired of them.

The Power of Delayed Gratification

Life is about paying now to enjoy later. Many of the blessings I enjoy today are the result of sacrifices I made years ago. Back then:

  • I didn’t chase unnecessary luxuries.
  • I focused on my education, ministry, and long-term goals.
  • I practiced contentment, knowing that better days were ahead.

Today, people pay my bills and send me gifts—not because I’m rich, but because I paid my dues early on.

Calm Down and Focus

Life can be overwhelming if you allow yourself to be consumed by it. Even now, with invitations and opportunities coming back-to-back, I remind myself to calm down and focus on what truly matters.

Key Lessons

  1. Don’t Chase What Won’t Last: Many things we pursue with passion today will lose their appeal tomorrow. Prioritize wisely.
  2. Pay Now, Play Later: If you choose to “play” now, you’ll have to “pay” later. Invest in your future through hard work, discipline, and focus.
  3. Delayed Gratification Brings Long-Term Joy: The things worth having take time and patience.
