I want to share a vital message about aging with purpose and intentionality. I reflect on my journey, spanning over two decades, and the transformation I’ve experienced, not just in age but in status, influence, and value. It’s important that as we age, we don’t remain stagnant. Aging should bring positive change in our status, much like fine wine becomes more valuable over time.
Twenty-four years ago, I visited this same city, in this same country. At that time, I was an associate minister, accompanying someone I hoped would introduce me to the global stage. Back then, I was placed in a shabby accommodation while my senior stayed in a hotel. I felt like a second-class citizen, but even then, I knew the value I had within me. I knew the fire that burned inside, and I never let that experience diminish my belief in myself.
One of the key lessons I’ve learned over the years is the importance of holding on to your self-worth. Never lose sight of the value you possess. And beyond that, be intentional about developing yourself develop your content, your character, your charisma, and your capacity. You must never stop growing.
When I was given a chance to speak back then, I was introduced as the “John the Baptist” who would usher in the “Messiah.” They gave me only 15 minutes to speak, but I knew this was my moment to make an impression. After 45 minutes of speaking, no one in the audience moved. I handed the microphone back to the host, and the main speaker, who was meant to follow me, declined to speak, saying I had already covered everything he intended to say. That moment changed everything. That very night, my accommodation was upgraded, and my status was elevated. People started recognizing the fire in me.
This experience taught me a critical lesson: the world will not give you opportunities on a silver platter. It won’t open doors for you, but it might leave a crack. You have to create your space, carry your chair, and sit down! There’s no second chance to make a first impression, so make each moment count.
Fast forward 24 years, and my story is different. Now, as I travel, I’m treated with respect and recognition. From the moment I landed in another African country, immigration officers were introducing me, people were taking pictures with me, and I was driven in a convoy of SUVs to a beautiful Airbnb. The treatment I receive today is a far cry from how I was treated decades ago. This transformation didn’t happen by accident—it was intentional. I aged, but I didn’t age without positive change.
My message to you is simple: don’t age without change. Be like wine, mature, purify yourself, and increase in value over time. As you grow older, aim to grow wiser, stronger, and more valuable. Don’t just celebrate new years; become a new you every year. Don’t just be a celebrant of new age, become a selling brand, someone who continuously improves and adds value.
Remember, in some backward societies, old age alone might earn you respect, but in today’s world, if you have no value, no one will treasure you. Add value to your life as you age, and ensure that with every passing year, you become more relevant, impactful, and indispensable.
Let your age come with honor, class, and value. Don’t age without a positive change in your status.
I remain your friend, Dr. Charles Apoki. God bless you.
