Reduce the Pressure on Your Life

Many of us are under unnecessary pressure simply because we want to impress others or worry about their opinions. You might feel pressured to fit in or to avoid disapproval, but ask yourself: What have those who admired you actually gained from their admiration?

I once gave a lift to an opinionated young man who, until he heard me preach, did not think much of me. His opinion no longer affects me. I once gave him money, which surprised him.

I also recall a bishop who criticized my wife and me for our attire before he became a bishop himself. When I later saw him in his elaborate regalia, he was surprised by my progress and even asked to rent one of my properties.

He had previously criticized our modest lifestyle and now struggled to keep up with appearances. I have since moved to a much larger home, but I realize that such things can become burdensome when children leave and buildings become impractical.

Embrace Simplicity

Don’t let anyone intimidate you, including myself. Live your own life and avoid getting into debt to keep up with others. I am currently selling one of my SUVs to avoid the pressure of rising fuel prices. The perfume I use is inexpensive but unique, and I’ve only recently started receiving more expensive gifts.

Attend only the events that truly matter to you and don’t make promises or vows you can’t keep. You don’t need to buy everything that seems cheap or necessary; avoid cluttering your life with unnecessary items.

Value Simplicity and Frugality

I could not afford foreign education for my children initially, so we sent them to Romania and sold some of our real estate to fund their studies. We later arranged for them to work in Massachusetts during summer. My frugal lifestyle has prepared me well for this stage of life.

Don’t live someone else’s lie. The “V” in “live” represents the value you place on your future. Without it, you live a lie rather than a fulfilling life.

I hope this message resonates with you. God bless you.
