In a video I made some time ago, I proposed a six-man presidential council with one president from each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Each president would serve a two-year term. Alongside this, I suggested that elections should be conducted by a federal body. If INEC can conduct elections for the House of Assembly and House of Representatives, they should also be able to handle elections for local government chairmanship and councilors.
A Pleasant Surprise:
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a bill was recently introduced in the Senate proposing the creation of a National Independent Local Government Elections Commission. This is a brilliant idea that will bring more autonomy to local governments, especially following the Supreme Court judgment that states should take control of local government finances.
Further Suggestions for Local Government Autonomy:
I also believe there should be other political parties at the local government level that are not national or state parties. This would allow groups of individuals with limited resources to form parties within their towns, enabling people with character, capacity, and conscience to contest local government elections and govern effectively.
The Power of Speaking Out:
I am so happy that someone has heard and acted on these ideas. It is not about claiming credit but recognizing that our voices matter. In psychology, there is a concept called “psychism,” which suggests that all of God’s creation can hear and are sensitive. So, never stop talking, suggesting, and sharing ideas that can bring positive change to our country. Remember, people monitor social media and different aspects of society, so your voice can indeed make a difference.
Thank You to the Senate:
I want to thank our brother from the north who brought this bill to the Senate. I pray that it is passed quickly. This Senate has shown the capability to pass important bills efficiently, and I hope this bill follows the same path.
God bless you.
