How to Earn Respect as an African in the Diaspora

1. Go Beyond Expectations:

If you want respect, you must go beyond what people expect from you. The only way to nullify insult is through results. Sometime ago, in 2012, I met a young white boy with tattoos who was traveling to Spain to “sin.” I engaged him in a conversation about evolution, Lamarckism, and the theory of dematerialization and dematerializations of matter. By the end of our discussion, he acknowledged that despite my darker skin, my intellect surpassed his. This encounter highlights that you must exceed expectations and prove preconceived notions wrong.

2. Excel in Your Endeavors:

Every person will treat you the way they treated the last person that looked like you because of the halo effect. However, you can change this perception by excelling in what you do. For instance, when you make the best results in your class, people will respect you. Nigerians have delivered valedictory speeches at various universities worldwide, earning respect by excelling academically.

3. Behave Yourself Well:

Good behavior is crucial. In the UK, two Nigerian women were fighting over a husband, which is embarrassing. Many black people are perceived as noisy and disorganized. I witnessed misbehavior from Nigerians on a plane from Dubai to Turkey, causing the air hostesses to lose respect for them. Behave decently in public to earn respect.

4. Contribute to the Economy:

Contributing to the economy is vital. No one discriminates against the owner of Harrods in the UK because they display productivity and enterprise. Nigerians who have been celebrated by US presidents or who have achieved significant medical advancements earn respect through their contributions.

5. Maintain Good Character:

Good character and integrity are essential. When you produce results and display good character, people will respect you.

6. Respect Your Nation:

Our nations must also be respected. If you come from a country with poor governance and bad news, people may see you as a parasite. That is why some of us are working hard to address issues in our countries and offer solutions.

7. Practice Respectful Religion:

Nigerians who take their Christianity overseas should preach Christ respectfully. Don’t engage in noisy, fire-and-brimstone tactics that scare people away.

Conclusion:

I hope I have answered your question on how to earn respect as an African in the diaspora. Remember, respect is earned through exceeding expectations, excelling in your endeavors, behaving well, contributing to the economy, maintaining good character, and respecting your nation.

God bless you.
